Parrot identification – How to recognize parrot type.

Parrots are one of the most popular pet birds, You will see them at many places. As parrots have many different types so recognizing a parrot is difficult if you don't have much knowledge. In this post, I will tell you how to recognize and differentiate between different parrot types.

Identification of popular parrots

Budgerigar

Budgerigars are small size parrots and they are widely adopted as a pet bird in many homes. Budgerigars are commonly known as Budgies. Their native color is green and yellow but they have lots of other color mutation. Recognizing a budgie is easy as they are different from all other parrots. Budgies have a small beak with a cere on top of it. Their beak is different from other parrots and they can be easily recognized by their beaks. 

There are approximately 32 main color mutations of budgie parrots. Most popular of them are Latino, Dark and Light Green, Albino, Skyblue, Cobalt etc

Ring-neck parrots

Ring-neck parrots also known as Rose-ringed parakeet are small size parrots with long tails. Male ring-neck parrot has a pink and black ring around its neck while females only have a green mark. Recognizing a Ring-neck parrot is very easy as they are different from other parrots. Ring-necks tails are very long and beautiful. 

There are many different color mutations of ring-neck parrots available now, but all of them have almost the same size. Green color is the native color of ring-neck parrots while other popular color mutations are

Do not mistake Ringneck parrots with the Alexandrine parrots. Although Alexandrian and ring-neck parrots have the same design but Alexandrian parrots are bigger and have red marks on their shoulders.

Lovebirds and Parrotlets

Lovebirds and parrotlets can be differentiated from other parrots easily as they are different from them. But differentiating them from each other is difficult as both are very similar. I have included both of them under the same heading so that I can tell you how to differentiate between them.  

Lovebirds vs parrotlets

Lovebirds are a little bigger than parrotlets and lovebirds male and female look identical to each other. Parrotlets male and females have some visual differences. Best way to differentiate between them is by their size.

African grey parrots 

As the name suggests African grey are grey color big size parrots. There are two main types of African Greys

African grey parrots are easy to recognize as they are quite different from other parrot types. African greys are also very intelligent birds they can learn a lot of words and sentences.

Macaws are biggest of all parrots. Due to their huge size, they are also known as King of parrots. Macaws have long tails and big beaks. They also make very loud voices.

Amazon 

Amazons are a group of parrots found in  South America to Mexico and the Caribbean. Amazon is basically the common name for all parrots of genus Amazona. Amazons are medium size parrots most of them have green color dominant in them.
